Thad and Josh

Thad Hoffmaster of Ladera Ranch has been a Big Brother to Josh, age 11, for two years.  Thad, 35, is single and works as a small business consultant.  Josh lives in Anaheim with his mother and three siblings; his father has never been part of his life.

Thad was motivated to join the program through the influence of his sister, who is a Big Sister in another state.  He explained, “I wanted to give something back, and make an impact in a specific young person’s life.”

Thad and Josh meet at least once a week and enjoy a wide range of activities, including going to movies, ice skating, and playing football and basketball.  They’re regulars at most Big Brothers-sponsored events, and were selected to go on an all expenses paid trip to Cabo San Lucas (during the trip, the pair caught a 200-lb. Marlin).

Thad has seen Josh transform from a shy, reserved boy to a personable, outgoing young man.  He noted, “It’s been fantastic.  Josh has become not only a friend, but a big part of my life.”

Thad is especially pleased that Josh is beginning to see his own potential and realize he can be successful in life.

Although he initially joined the program to help a child, Thad has discovered that the benefit was mutual: “Josh has had just as big of an impact on my life as I have had on his.  Our relationship has grown strong, and I can only help that he will be a part of my life for a long time to come.”
